What is Redistricting?

Every ten years, county supervisorial districts must be redrawn so that each district is substantially equal in population. This process is called redistricting and is important in ensuring that each supervisor represents approximately the same number of constituents.

In Tulare County, the Board of Supervisors (Board) is responsible for drawing supervisorial districts using U.S. Census data, which is expected to be released around September 30, 2021. For the County of Tulare, the redistricting process must be completed by December 15, 2021.

On May 12, 2020, the Board approved the creation of a 2021 Advisory Redistricting Commission (Commission).  The Commission will seek public input regarding boundary changes and present recommendations to the Board for possible modification and adoption.

Why Does Redistricting Matter to Me?

Redistricting determines which neighborhoods and communities are grouped together into a supervisorial district for purposes of electing a Board member. The Board of Supervisors will seek input in selecting the next district map for supervisorial districts. You have an opportunity to share with the Commission and Board of Supervisors how you think district boundaries should be drawn to best represent your community.

How Will the Public be Notified About Redistricting?

The Board of Supervisors will reach out to local media to publicize the redistricting process, make a good faith effort to notify various community groups about the redistricting process, and provide public hearings and/or workshops in applicable languages if residents submit a request in advance. All redistricting hearings and/or workshops will be noticed to the public in advance, and proposed maps will be posted online for public review and comment before adoption.
